The Physiology of Trauma: How the Nervous System Learns Protection - and Finds Safety Again 

Trauma is often thought of as something that happens in the mind, but before it becomes a memory, it is first an experience of the body.

Every moment of our lives, the nervous system is asking one simple question:

Am I safe?

It asks this question long before we are consciously aware of it. Through our senses, our breathing, our posture, our relationships and our environment, the body is constantly gathering information about the world around us and adjusting our physiology accordingly.

This is not a flaw in our design - it is one of our greatest strengths. The nervous system evolved to protect us, helping us respond quickly to danger and return to a calmer state once that danger had passed.

The challenge is that many of us no longer live in environments that allow this natural rhythm to unfold.

For most of human history, periods of stress were followed by periods of recovery. Today, our lives are often characterised by constant stimulation. We wake to alarms, reach for our phones before we get out of bed, move between emails, meetings and notifications, and finish the day under artificial light, still connected to work, news and social media.

Our attention is continually being drawn away from the present moment.

Each notification, headline or demand asks the nervous system to orient itself once again. None of these experiences are necessarily dangerous, but together they create an environment where the body rarely feels it has permission to completely settle.

Our nervous system simply adapts.

Many of us become so accustomed to living with subtle tension that we no longer notice it. The shoulders stay slightly raised, the jaw gently clenched, the breath becomes shallow and the mind remains busy, scanning for what needs to be done next.

Eventually, this begins to feel normal.

The nervous system has learned that being prepared is the safest way to be.

When we perceive challenge or danger, the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system prepares us for action. Heart rate increases, breathing changes, muscles contract and our awareness becomes focused on survival. If the threat cannot be escaped or overcome, the body may shift into a parasympathetic shutdown response, characterised by exhaustion, numbness or collapse.

These are not signs that something has gone wrong.

They are intelligent survival responses.

The difficulty comes when the body is unable to recognise that the threat has passed.

Instead of moving naturally between activation and recovery, the nervous system remains organised around protection. Over time this affects every part of our physiology. Muscles remain tense, breathing becomes restricted, digestion slows, sleep is disturbed and energy that would normally be used for repair and restoration is redirected towards vigilance.

One of the muscles that often reflects these protective patterns is the psoas.

Deep within the body, the psoas connects the spine to the legs and works closely with the diaphragm, pelvic floor and the connective tissues that form the body's deep core. Because of its role in posture, movement and balance, it is constantly responding to the information the nervous system receives.

When we curl forwards to protect ourselves, the psoas participates.

When we brace against uncertainty, it becomes more active.

When we prepare to run or stand our ground, it helps organise the body for action.

In this way, it has been described as one of fear's faithful servants.

But this is only half of its story.

The psoas is not simply a muscle of protection - it is also a muscle of possibility.

When we feel safe, it softens and lengthens. It supports us as we stand tall, walk freely, breathe deeply and move towards the people, places and experiences that bring us joy. It helps us reach, explore, laugh and engage with the world.

Like the nervous system itself, the psoas is constantly adapting. It responds not only to fear, but also to curiosity, connection and ease.

This reminds us of something important: the body is not designed simply to survive.

It is designed to live.

This same relationship can be seen throughout the body's connective tissue, or fascia. Once thought of as little more than packing material, fascia is now understood to be a living, responsive network that surrounds and connects every muscle, organ, nerve and blood vessel. Rich in sensory receptors, it continually communicates with the nervous system, adapting to how we move, breathe and experience the world.

As protective patterns become habitual, our connective tissues adapt alongside them. The body gradually becomes organised around those patterns of holding - not because fascia stores trauma like a memory bank, but because living tissues respond to repeated use.

Healthy physiology is never static.

The heart expands and contracts.

The lungs fill and empty.

Muscles tighten and soften.

The nervous system moves between effort and recovery.

Life itself is rhythmic.

Trauma can be understood as a disruption to that rhythm.

When an overwhelming experience cannot be fully processed, or when stress becomes constant, the body may struggle to return to a place of openness. Instead, it remains prepared for what might happen next.

One of the remarkable qualities of the nervous system is that it adapts to whatever it experiences most often.

This means that hypervigilance can begin to feel normal. Constant busyness can feel productive. Tightness can feel like strength. We may even begin to identify with these protective patterns without realising they were adaptations in the first place.

When we spend long periods in survival mode, our thinking often changes too.

It becomes harder to pause.

Harder to tolerate uncertainty.

Harder to see nuance.

Our attention is naturally drawn outwards, searching for what is wrong, who is to blame or what needs to change before we can finally relax.

Yet genuine regulation begins in the opposite direction.

It begins by turning our attention inward - not to withdraw from the world, but to notice the signals our body has been sending us all along.

As the nervous system experiences greater safety, breathing becomes easier, muscles soften and our awareness widens. We regain the capacity to think more clearly, respond more thoughtfully and meet challenges with greater resilience.

Developing a deeper sense of internal safety is not about avoiding life's difficulties. It is about creating the physiological conditions that allow us to face them with steadiness rather than fear.
